In General: The New Year starts with a difficult Mercury/ Vesta square that can put us in an insecure frame of mind! Things to do with home and hearth come under the spotlight, but not necessarily in a good way. It’s a good time to double check investments, property dealings and the family budget. On the plus side the Year also starts with a Pisces Moon which can help us to get in touch with our deeper inner selves. If we are happy to go there we can learn a lot about ourselves and make some genuinely transformational New Year’s resolutions, but if we fight this then we can end up confused and angry with our circumstance and direction in life. For those with birthdays this week the Year ahead promises many possibilities and opportunities to realize dreams. At 11 am Australian eastern summer time on 1 January 2009 the international time scale ‘Universal Coordinated Time’ (UTC) will be delayed by one second for the insertion of an extra second. This happens at 11 am as that corresponds to 0 hours UTC.
The reason for the extra second is to allow for the gradual slowing down of the Earth. This slowing in turn is due to the effect of the tides raised mainly by the Moon that act like a brake on the rotation of the Earth. The slowing is very gradual and is approximately 0.002 seconds per century.
